gentle fingers on ivory keys.
your sweetness trills through me, and
your kindness rings out toward the world.
i wish i could hold you
like the music box resting in my palm.
i’d melt myself to sleep in seconds at
the sound of your lullabies, and
wedge myself between the
gnawed gears that guide them if
it meant i could be a-
part of your song.
instead,
my guilt will make music with my tears, and
sunrise will glint thru the crystal rags
sewn beneath my eyes.
tonight, i’ll pray
the harmonies you wear as wings
fit you well.
Farewell Songbird.
today you looked at me and your eyes
glowed like sunrise on a theater screen.
orange backlight lifted by candy apple
cheeks. arias of laughter seeped from a
smile made of diamonds and
i was caught.
i am greyscale and monotone.
i am the dingy white trim that lines the
cinderblock walls at the doctors office.
i am morning grey fog, and stale tea, and
painfully flat singing. i smell like
bleach wipes and gasoline.
i am ugly, but not ugly enough to be
art- just ugly enough to leave you
feeling barren.
you are a technicolor nightmare- you
remind me of how the screen always feels
brighter at the movie theater than at home.
i want to watch you live your big, beautiful,
complicated life and-
not intervene in the gorgeous mess of it all. wouldn’t
dare bring out that awful bliss.
like your favorite film i’ll be here when you
need me, if you can be
The Ending That Never Changes.

this morning i glided down the byway and
watched clouds of fog settle into the
divots of the valley. it was like
a cat made of vapor had nested itself in
amongst the rows on rows of
frosted cornhusks that
line the field.
the morning mist thick like the cream You’d
pour to coax a stray cat in so it isn’t
swallowed by the night.
the smoke hugged the soil and the soil
cupped it in its arms like i
held my grandfather in his last days.
they held each other like i’d want to hold You.
when i rise with the sun and
sleep when it sets, i feel like god.
i wake to stars and
navigate by moonlight in Your image.
the big and little dipper greet me kindly and
softly fade out as the first rays
